Andries Nieuwenhuize is a teacher-researcher at the Excellence and Innovation in Education lectureship.
'How does the use of serious games promote teachers' confidence in recognizing and discussing online bullying?'
Andries studied Computer Science at HZ University of Applied Sciences. He obtained a master's degree in Software Engineering from the Open University of the Netherlands, where he conducted research into unlocking sociological theories about bullying for game designers. For this he used game design lenses, game design principles on a card.

As junior researcher at the Data Science research group, she deals with various abstract (as well as visual) machine learning challenges, consistent with her specialization within the fields of time series, geospatial and image analysis. +
After many years in business, Bob transferred to HZ University of Applied Sciences in 1997. Until 2019, Bob primarily taught Electronics, Control Systems and Drive Engineering. In 2019, he joined the Delta Power research group.
Bob is active in the research program on tidal energy. He plays a key role in implementing the processes to control and measure the operation of bidirectional pumps/turbines in the Delta Power lab. Here, researchers simulate how such bidirectional pumps/turbines would function in a barrier between, for example, the North Sea and a lake like Lake Grevelingen.
In addition, Bob is active in running and jointly developing the Hydrogen Lab. In this lab, Delta Power can train students and educate interested stakeholders about hydrogen by demonstrating technology related to the use of green hydrogen. +
Dr. Brenda Walles is a marine ecologist with an interest in eco-morphological interactions in estuarine systems.
She graduated from Wageningen University and Research in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in Soil, Water and Atmosphere and a master's degree in Hydrology and Water Quality, both with a specialization in Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality Management.
In 2015, Brenda obtained her PhD at the university in Wageningen. Her PhD research at IMARES (Yerseke) focused on the role of ecosystem engineers (Pacific oysters) on the eco-morphological development of intertidal areas. Through in-situ experiments and field observations, she has drawn up design rules for the effective use of oyster reefs as an erosion mitigating measure.
She then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at NIOZ (Yerseke). Her research focused on the eco-morphological functioning and management of intertidal flats.
Brenda then worked as a marine ecologist at Wageningen Marine Research (Yerseke) on applied research within the entire southwest delta. She investigated the ecological functioning of intertidal areas after mitigating measures such as management realignment (Perkpolder), tidal restoration (Rammegors), nourishments (Oesterdam, Roggenplaat and Galgenplaat), use of erosion mitigating measures (reefs in the Grevelingenmeer) and reduced hydrodynamics (Knuitershoek, Baalhoek and Bath).
Brenda has been affiliated with the Building with Nature research group at HZ as a lecturer-researcher since September 2023. +

In 1997, she joined the Aquatic Ecotechnology program at HZ, where she became more proficient in working with students and teaching. From 2004, she started teaching Nature, Science and Technology at HZ's Pabo. In 2014, she earned her master's degree in Learning and Innovation, where she did her graduate research on opportunities for N&T within Outdoor Education.
In addition to involvement in the development and use of green play and learning environments, her focus within HZ is increasingly on coordinating and coaching interdisciplinary work and action research. The minor Becoming Fit for the Future is an example of this. +
Chiu is a marine ecologist with a specialty in biogeomorphology and biogeochemistry of subtidal and intertidal habitats.
He received a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from Moravian University in America in 2009, followed by a master's degree in Biological Oceanography from Florida State University in 2013. He then worked for the State of Florida in environmental management and permitting.
In 2021, he did his doctoral research at NIOZ in Yerseke. In this project, he focused on the bidirectional interactions between biotic and abiotic aspects of the (subtidal) seafloor and how this can influence the development of bedforms (ridges, mega ridges and sand waves) and the reverse. He also investigated the influence of sediment composition (i.e., shells) on the migration rate of sand ridges.
After the PhD, Chiu worked at Wageningen Marine Research (Yerseke) as a marine ecologist and project leader, where he was mainly involved in monitoring projects in the Southwest Delta. These projects included the efficacy of outer dike measures and their influences on benthic and bird communities and sediment composition.
