A roadmap for implementing alternative water sources in coastal regions

The Interreg 2 Seas project FRESH4Cs focuses on sustainable growth in coastal areas by exploring alternative freshwater sources. Traditional sources are facing pressure due to factors like climate change and population growth, exacerbated in coastal areas by salinization. Current solutions often prioritize flood control over water supply, creating a mismatch. Discussions often focus on quantity rather than quality, despite increasing water quality issues. Effective freshwater management is complex, involving technical and socio-economic challenges and multiple stakeholders. Shifting from the cost to the value of water is crucial. The roadmap emphasizes an integral value perspective, early actor involvement, and a clear area-based approach. It was developed through desk research and interviews with stakeholders from the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK, including users, managers, authorities, and NGOs. Lessons learned and policy implications are discussed based on water system analysis, actor involvement, values pursued, and encountered barriers.
