Coproducing Safety12 september 201631 januari 2017The project ‘Professionals and self-reliant citizens’ (funded by Centre of Expertise Delta Technology) is aimed at development of practical knowledge about co-creating safety and to make this applicable for communities in the south-west delta. This is established by training safety professionals to deal with resilience, increasing awareness among communities, developing instruments to enhance and monitor community resilience, and by improving alignment between professionals, citizens, businesses and other societal actors. In this study flood risk is used as a main scenario.

For this project, it is essential to have insight in the basic perception and action strategies of citizens, businesses, professionals and governments in relation to flood risks. We have two assignments available in this project. The first is assignment is related to a surveys about self-reliance within Zeeland and organization of workshops. The second assignment is about the development of a resilience scorecard (impact analysis). This contains a.o. an exploration and analysis of resilience instruments as developed by FEMA (USA), Torrens Institute (Australia), Kent Resilience Team (UK) and UFZ Leipzig (Germany).

Critical infrastructure and resilience in Reimerswaal12 september 201631 januari 2017The research group collaborates with many partners in a study about the impact of a flooding of the Reimerswaal area, both locally and regionally. The research is about the cascade-effects of a flooding disrupting the vital infrastructure and measures to decrease the socio-economic impact and enhance possibilities for recovery of society. This study offers several possibilities for students. Assignments are available about analyzing the vulnerability of the critical infrastructure in Reimerswaal. An assignment can for example be focused at an in-depth analysis of the vulnerability of the civil works (roads, rail, sluices) or the electricity and communication networks (ICT, phone, etc).

Assignments: research minor Student: Delta Management, (Civil) Engineering, ICT, other relevant education programmes Research type: depending on assignment Prerequisite: excellent analytical and good writing skills; specific interest in water safety, disaster management and critical infrastructure works. Partner: Gemeente Reimerswaal, Veiligheidsregio Zeeland, Waterschap Scheldestromen, Rijkswaterstaat, Provincie Zeeland en diverse netwerkbeheerders vitale infrastructuur (Delta Netwerkbedrijf, Tennet, Prorail, Evides)

Reimerswaal1 oktober 201631 juli 2020The Multi-Layer Safety concept looks at the consequences of a possible flooding. This project will specifically address the following question: What impact does a flood have on our vital infrastructure? The goal of the project is to develop a better integral insight in making the electricity supply network flood resilient. To this end, insight will first be provided into the most vulnerable electricity sets. Subsequently, measures will be derived to increase the robustness.

Water sensitive area development in the Waterpoort region12 september 201631 januari 2017The HZ Delta Academy participates together with 3 provinces, 9 municipalities, two other Universities of Applied Sciences and several other organizations in Waterpoort. Waterpoort is an area development process initiated by the province of Brabant to create new opportunities in the mainly rural area around the Volkerak-Zoom lake. In this area redevelopment process, involved governments, businesses, ngo’s and citizens try to find new roles in water related area development. The involved organizations try to stimulate and facilitate citizens and local businesses to innovate, to restore connectivity with the water and to co-create an identity and future of the area.

In this project you will build on previous research. With input from participating students we created an overview of the different user groups in Waterpoort and their relation with the water system, as well as an overview of the main historical drivers for transitions in the area. New insights about water sensitive area development are brought together in an overall document, called the ‘Atlas of the Waterpoort’.

Follow-up assignments are pending.
