Applied Research in relevant HZ projects

When you choose the Applied Research Track, you will work in close collaboration with HZ researchers on a range of relevant topics. You practice your applied research skills and gain expertise in cases that require urgent and valuable knowledge, resulting from empirical studies. You will..

... work on and gain experience in a real project. Stakeholders and experts from the work field are looking forward to collaborate with you and to find solutions to the challenges they currently encounter. Your contribution will be of direct use to them, and future minor participants will build on your work.

... learn to develop a project plan and experience how to execute this with your team, or individually. In other words, you will further develop your professional skills, like executing a project, collaborating with experts and professionals from your and other fields and taking responsibility, and developing your research capacity. Coaches and researchers will train and support you to achieving these.

... contribute to the project with your expertise and knowledge with a curious, constructive and respectful attitude. Meanwhile you will learn from and to collaborate with (young) professionals from various fields of expertise and with different responsibilities. This enables you to gain experience in your future work field, as the job market requires not only specialists but also generalists with a critical eye and a proactive attitude.

Coaching

When following the Applied Research track you will be supervised by two different coaches. Coaching on content and specifics about the research topic will be done by a coach part of your chosen research department within HZ. This coach will be available for you to answer questions regarding a particular field of expertise. When meeting with the research coach and your project team, discuss the project, identify progress, lessons learned and next steps for the project. The Research coach will be available at least 1 hour per two weeks. It is up to you, your project group and your research coach to discuss whether you want to meet weekly (30 minutes) or bi-weekly (1 hour) to discuss matters concerning the contents of your project. Update your research coach on progress and involve him/her in your Teams Channel. See this coach as the expert within the field of your research.

Within the Garage, a coach is available to guide you through the process of the minor, for example regarding personal development, wellbeing, team- and community building. This coach will support you in your personal development and will help to reflect at your own and your teams' performance. This gives you insight in your professional skills, how to further develop these and how to benefit from them in future projects and your career or a master program in general. A Garage coach will be available for update meetings during the week and will also be present once a month during a meeting with you/ your team and the research coach.

Besides coaching, it is important to meet regularly (almost daily) with your project team to work on the project.

Presence

It is advised to be present at least one day a week at the office of the HZ research department. By doing this you will get a better understanding of the projects, tasks, responsibilities they have. This will help you get a better understanding of the context of your project. Besides, it is a nice way to get familiar with the team. The other 4 days of this fulltime minor can be spend in a hybrid way of working. However, it is expected to be physically present at the Garage office at least 4 half-days (dagdelen), the remaining hours can be worked from elsewhere or online, but always in consultation with your team.

The two coaches also play a role during the assessments. All tests will be assessed by your Garage coach and the Applied Research Milestone packages (which include the research proposal and research report) will be also assessed by your Research coach.
