Tim is a respectful and driven researcher who values communication and project management. +
Tjeerd Bouma studied biology at Utrecht University (NL), did a PhD in the field of Plant Physiology at the Wageningen University NL (i.e., quantifying maintenance costs in agricultural crops), followed by a post-doc in the field of Plant Ecology at Pennsylvania State University USA (i.e., quantifying drought stress on energy use and root longevity in fruit trees).
Since then he has worked at the NIOZ-Yerseke (former NIOO-CEME) on the ecology of tidal wetlands in estuaries and delta’s. Bouma has a strong interest in crossing the border between fundamental and applied research, and holds both an honorary Professorship at the University of Groningen and a Lectureship at the HZ. +

Vana Tsimopoulou is a civil engineer with expertise in hydraulic engineering and flood risk management.
She received her PhD in civil engineering from Delft University of Technology in 2015. For her PhD, she developed analytical and numerical models to support risk-based decision-making in flood risk management ventures in the Netherlands and Japan.
Vana has worked as a consultant for several companies, including Van Oord, HKV Consultants and Lynkeus Srl. She has been involved in projects in many countries, including the Netherlands, Turkey, the United States, Bulgaria, Japan, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
Since 2015, she has been devoting increasing time to teaching in the roles of associate lecturer in probabilistic design at IHE-Delft Institute for Water Education and lecturer in Safety and Security Management at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Vincent Bax graduated from the master's program in Environmental Sciences at Wageningen University in 2015. In the following years, he gained experience as a researcher and lecturer at the Universidad de Ciencias y Humanidades in Peru and as a consultant at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture in Colombia.
Here his work consisted mainly of analyzing the interactions between biodiversity loss and economic activities in tropical forest areas. It included fieldwork with isolated communities in the Amazon in which he sought to understand how their livelihoods affect and are affected by the dynamics of ecosystem change. He also developed spatial modeling approaches to investigate land use change processes in the tropical Andes and propose candidate areas for biodiversity protection measures.
Vincent joined the HZ's Building with Nature research group as a lecturer researcher in Human Geography since April 2020. His current research focuses on how nature-based approaches to coastal defense are perceived by society and how we can best implement them to prepare for some of the pressing, socio-environmental challenges ahead. +

As an earth scientist, Wietse van de Lageweg is primarily interested in fluvial, estuarine and coastal systems. These environments are characterized by ever-changing patterns in flow and sediment transport and complex interactions with vegetation and fauna.
He uses a variety of approaches, including flume experiments, numerical modeling and field observations to better understand these systems and predict how changes in these environments affect society.
Wietse received his PhD from Utrecht University in 2013. His PhD project focused on the morphodynamics and sedimentary architecture of meandering rivers. He then worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at the University of Hull in England. His research focused on climate change impacts and adaptation of coastal and fluvial systems and was part of the EU-funded Hydralab+ project. As part of internships in the United States and New Zealand, he also studied shoreline-sandbar coupling on Tairua beach in New Zealand and used the Delft3D morphodynamic model to simulate hydrodynamics, sediment transport, morphodynamics and conservation of sand and mud in the Columbia River estuary in America.
In 2018, Wietse worked as a coastal morphology expert at AnteaGroup Belgium. Using the shoreline model UNIBEST-CL+, he simulated shoreline changes after the construction of a possible mega-supplementation along the Flemish coast. +
