How to make progress between people with different worldviews? Hans' motivation is an idealistic one. How do we make the world a little better together?
As lector of Expertise and Valorization Management, Hans deals almost daily with the question: How can we use each other's expertise in such a way that together we do the right things? I work on a wide range of topics, environmental management, energy transition, mobility, but also for issues related to dementia or cancer.
Students are introduced to the scientific approach of systems thinking. Three competencies are important here: conceptual thinking, critical reflection and connecting. With these competencies, they can become change facilitators.
They do this together, using content and exercises. They learn to question each other: What is your goal and what are your assumptions? In this way, they discover that people have different worldviews, assumptions and beliefs. What steps can you ultimately take that are arguably desirable and culturally feasible? The theory used for this is the social theory of a sustainable society.
Hans graduated as a computer scientist from TU Delft in 1987 and received his PhD from Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 1995.
In addition to my work at research universities and at HZ, I have gained experience as a software engineer and consultant in business. +

Hilde Kooiker is a senior researcher at the Excellence and Innovation in Education lectureship.
“What happens in a person's mind when he reads?”
Hilde completed her teacher training at the Zeeland University of Applied Sciences. There the interest she already had in language was further stimulated and that is why she went on to study Dutch language and literature at Utrecht University. She chose to specialize in communication science. Her graduation research was about the influence of text structure on the understanding and appreciation of textbook texts in pre-vocational secondary education.
She worked in primary education for ten years and was a Dutch teacher at the Primary Education Teacher training course at the Zeeland University of Applied Sciences from 2012 to 2024. In the autumn of 2024 she will start as a senior researcher at the Excellence and Innovation in Education lectureship.
Hilde is interested in language development and in particular in how text comprehension is achieved and how education can use this knowledge. Based on this interest and the expertise she has built up during her PhD research, she is project leader of the Workshop for Educational Research on Reading Skills, in which teachers from primary education, secondary education, secondary vocational education and Zeeland libraries work together to strengthen their reading education. She also participates in a complementary study into Collaborative investigative work in regional networks (NRO), in which she follows the learning network 'reading with understanding and involvement' in Amsterdam.
Hilde received her PhD on October 18, 2024 for research into the possibilities of integrating reading education into science and technology lessons in upper primary education. The focus was on teaching knowledge about the structure of informative texts. +
