Danny Janssen is a civil engineer specialized in hydraulic engineering. After completing his bachelor's degree at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and his master's degree at Delft University of Technology, he conducted doctoral research at Delft University of Technology and the Netherlands Defense Academy.
During his doctoral studies, he researched emergency measures that can be taken in the event of incipient dike breaches, using defense resources. In this research, he conducted physical experiments on three different scales. These experiments showed that the tested prototype has great potential to prevent or delay an actual (threatening) dike breach.
In 2024, Danny joined the research group at HZ University of Applied Sciences as the project leader of the Animals in the Dike project. +
Driven from a young age with a keen interest in nature, Demian Zwaan graduated from Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden in 2020 on improving nutrient media for the macro-algae Chaetomorpha linum and Gracilariopsis longissima.
Within the Coastal and Marine Management program, he completed a master's degree in marine biology and specialization in aquaculture and fisheries. He completed several internships at De Jong Marinelife B.V. in Spijk. Here he worked on the operation of RAS/filtration systems, water quality and the cultivation of copepods such as Acartia tonsa.
In early 2022, Demian joined the Aquaculture in Delta Areas research group as a researcher. His work is mainly focused on optimization for breeding oysters and maintenance and improvement of the SEAlab, among others. +
Diana Korteweg Maris is project manager for the HZ Knowledge Center for Coastal Tourism and Centre of Expertise Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality.
She completed her bachelor's degree in Tourism Management at NHTV in Breda in 2000 and has since worked as a project manager at the Brabants Bureau for Tourism and NHTV. Since 2008 she has been working for Knowledge Center Coastal Tourism, the first years from NHTV and since 2014 fully at the HZ.
Her expertise lies mainly in facts and figures: measuring tourism and its impacts, both economically and socially. She likes to share these figures with policy makers, entrepreneurs, administrators, students and the press. "Always from the idea that you need knowledge to make the right choices for your business or an area."
She works on studies on the demand side (who are our guests, how many guests come), on the supply side (how much supply do we have and how is this changing) and on the impact of tourism. An important theme here is how tourism can develop in balance with Zeeland's society and landscape. "A big challenge, because measuring that balance is a fairly new research topic." +
Dylan received his bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the HZ in 2018. After a graduate internship at NIOZ, he stayed active in seaweed and started working as a researcher at research group Marine Biobased Chemistry.
Initially, he did a lot of research mainly on seaweed sterols and how their production is influenced by the growing environment. For the ALGOL project, he worked on characterizing sterols in seaweed waste streams. He also worked on the chemical taste profiling of seaweed for the Valgorize project and was a project leader for the FUCOS project. In this, the pigment fucoxanthin from seaweed was applied in sustainable, bioactive cosmetics.
In addition to his work as a researcher, he is involved in education. He gives weekly practical lessons to first-year chemistry students. +

Elisa Platjouw is a researcher in the Marine Biobased Chemistry research group.
She received her HBO Chemistry degree, majoring in Life Sciences from HZ University of Applied Sciences in 2016. After working for over a year as a research assistant in a plant tissue culture company with Phalaenopsis and Anthurium, she continued her career as a Medior Development Analyst in a food safety laboratory.
Here she worked on developing and validating analytical methods with analytical equipment such as GC-TQ-MS, LC-TQ-MS and LC-GC-FID to quantify contaminants such as pesticides, dioxins, MOSHMOAH and 3-MPCD.
She was responsible for coordinating various working groups to ensure the quality and progress of development in the lab.
Since May 2022, she has been working in the Marine Biobased Chemistry research group as a research associate where she continues to develop in the field of flavor analysis. She works with minor students on the development of mineral analysis and fatty acid analysis on milk, among other things. She also collaborates on other research projects and contributes to applied research. +
Emma obtained her master's degree in Metropolitan Issues and Policy from Erasmus University in 2019.
Since May 2022, she has been working at HZ Knowledge Center Zeeuwse Samenleving as a junior researcher. Among other topics, the labor market and sustainability are in Emma's area of interest. She also enjoys the challenge of making research data accessible to readers in an accessible way. +
Through her work at HZ Knowledge Center for Coastal Tourism, Emma Lemmers wants to contribute to making the sector more sustainable through research and projects and thus make an impact.
She would like to work for an organization that is driven to optimize the sector, where everyone can enjoy tourism and recreation while taking into account the livability of residents and the support of nature.
She is creative, ambitious, committed, results-oriented and organized. Within the knowledge center, she is involved in several topic areas. During her master studies, she conducted research on degrowth. +
Emma McAteer is the coordinator of the Water Technology research group.
She joined HZ in 2015 and has worked as a researcher and now coordinator of the Water Technology research group on various projects around themes such as freshwater reuse (GO-Fresh II, FRESH4Cs - Alternative Fresh Water resources for Coastal Areas, Robuust Water Systeem Zeeuws-Vlaanderen) and resource recovery and reuse in the form of NEREUS - New Energy and Resources for Urban Sanitation.
In addition to her work at the research group, Emma teaches water technology for the undergraduate course Water Management Aquatic Ecotechnology.
Emma graduated with a master's degree in Environmental Engineering from Queen's University of Belfast (Northern Ireland) in 2010 and worked for several years as a process engineer for small-scale, domestic and commercial biological wastewater treatment plants in Northern Ireland before joining HZ. +
Eva Hartog is the point of contact for the mussel and oyster sector in Zeeland as project leader and senior researcher of Aquaculture in Delta Areas. She has specialized in seafood research since she started as a researcher at the research group in 2013.
Among other things, she has conducted research on the oyster borer, more efficient trapping of oyster spawn and co-developed an app for mussel fishermen that gives them better insight into their culture. "HZ has established a good position as a knowledge institution in this field," says Eva, who is straightforward and prefers to have her feet in the clay doing research.
Eva studied Water Management at HZ. She then went to work at NIOZ in Yerseke where she was a Macrobenthos research assistant. After three years she started working at Imares in the same village. Here she already did a lot of fieldwork on fish and shellfish. Eva enjoys working with students, whom she wants to enthuse about aquaculture research. "Practical and applied research in this sector is enormously challenging and interesting." +
Eva joined our team in her role as account manager Health, Education & Wellbeing in January 2022. For Eva, the theme '(improving) quality of life' has always been a key motivator. Both during her research master in Epidemiology & Public Health and within her previous position as account manager within pharmacy. Even as account manager for the social welfare domain, this theme is often at the centre again. Eva is a go-getter, she embraces every opportunity to take up a project. When she notices that her discussion partners is equally enthusiastic about a topic, her energy levels are boosted and she’s adamant to find the perfect match. +
Dr. Evelot Westerink-Duijzer started as researcher Supply Chain Innovation at HZ University of Applied Sciences in June 2022. Evelot is trained as an econometrician and specialized in mathematical optimization. Her research interests include quantitative analysis and optimization.
Evelot has both a bachelor and master in Econometrics and Operations Research. She did her PhD in Operational Research focusing on healthcare logistics. From 2017-2022 she worked as a university lecturer at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where she taught several mathematical and statistical courses in the bachelor Econometrics and the master Quantitative Logistics and Operational Research.
Within the lectoraat Supply Chain Innovation at HZ University of Applied Sciences, Evelot is involved as researcher in several projects in the themes ‘Logistical flows and connections’ and ‘Autonomous Transport’. +

Flavia Simona Cosoveanu has been a lecturer-researcher at the Resilient Deltas research group since October 2018.
She did the bachelor in Environmental Sciences at Alcala University (Spain) and a master in Land and Water Management at Wageningen University.
At the HZ, she teaches the following courses: Water Governance, Research Methodologies I and II and Hydrology. Within the Resilient Deltas group, she has been involved in the FRAMES project and currently, in the SARCC project.
The two projects focus on flood risk management and adaptation in coastal areas. She has also started a PhD project in collaboration with Utrecht University on experimental governance of climate adaptation in coastal areas. +
Frances Kannekens is coordinator of the Asset Management research group. She completed her HBO Civil Engineering at the Hogeschool Rotterdam, where she received the Hydraulic Engineering Award and the Bouwend Rijnmond Award for her thesis.
She then continued her studies at the University of Antwerp. Here she obtained her Master's degree in Heritage Studies. After her studies, she joined an engineering firm as Asset Manager. During this period she had the opportunity to inspect various hydraulic works, including the Maeslandkering and the (old) lock complex of IJmuiden.
After her work as Asset Manager, Frances joined Rijkswaterstaat Zee en Delta. Here she was Coordinator of the Asset Management Team Roads. During this period she and her team were responsible for the management and maintenance of all roads and tunnels within Zeeland. Together they worked on the accessibility of Zeeland, for now and the coming years.
Since 2022, Frances has been working within the HZ as coordinator of the Asset Management research group. In addition to her coordinating duties, she assists her team in various research projects, such as Manabas Coast, Animals in the Dike and Riobase. +

Frank Peeters is a commercial engineer by training and has been with HZ University of Applied Sciences since 2003.
He teaches Information Literacy to International Business students and supervises minor students on various research assignments. He is also a researcher at the New Business Models chair.
Frank has a great affinity with digital technologies, a keen eye for detail and a drive 'to get things done'. +

Gabriëlle Verbeeke has been working as a researcher at the Aquaculture in Delta Areas research group since 2017.
HZ University of Applied Sciences is not unknown territory for her. Gabriëlle studied Aquatic Ecotechnology at the college. She graduated in the Aquaculture in Delta Areas research group on the qualitative and quantitative culture of the marine microalgae species Rhodomonas sp. under the supervision of Christos Latsos.
After completing her degree, she immediately joined the research group. Her work includes the Coastal Laboratory project in the Waterdunen nature reserve. Coastal Laboratory is a testing ground for saline crops. Together with entrepreneurs, new ideas are being tried out. +
Gabriëlle trains students, teachers and the professional field in the system approach for finding broadly supported solutions for complex, socially relevant challenges. To this end, she coaches (future) professionals in having constructive discussions, developing an inquisitive and reflective attitude, and in system thinking. In this way, Gabriëlle promotes a process of Lifelong Learning and the formation of Coalitions of the Willing that jointly seek the desired improvements. She is currently developing rich learning-working environments, such as practical research programmes and living labs, in order to develop the aforementioned competences. Gabriëlle has worked at HZ University Of Applied Sciences since 2013. Previously she worked at the think tank Centre of Sustainable Consumption and Production in Germany and studied Environmental Sciences and Biological Production Sciences in Wageningen. +
Gerda Andringa was appointed on 1 September 2020 as lecturer of the HZ University of Applied Sciences' Elderly Care research group. She is also associate professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College Roosevelt (UCR).
She obtained her PhD in 2000 on new treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease. She then worked as a visiting scientist at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, USA, and as a lecturer at the Department of Medical Pharmacology at VU University Amsterdam.
In recent years, she has focused on interventions and technological aids for the elderly, especially people with dementia. Gerda won the 2020 Teacher of the Year election at Utrecht University. The jury praised Gerda for working closely with students on her research. She is not afraid to 'create a learning and working environment in which she challenges them to work hard and get the best out of themselves', but she also gives students room to make mistakes. This is how she gets the best out of them. +
Gerrit coordinates at HZ University of Applied Sciences applied research relevant to energy transition in delta regions.
His personal research focus is on applied, future technologies that solve issues of system integration of renewable energy sources (solar, (offshore) wind, tidal), especially in the context of industrial and maritime processes in Zeeland and Flanders.
He has an eye for solutions such as flexibility and storage through batteries, hydrogen and flexible thermal processes/storage. +
Drs. Gert Jacobusse is a lecturer-researcher for the Data Science research group. He is particularly interested in Predictive Analytics.
In this field, historical data are exploited to examine relationships between variables. These relationships provide insight to better understand processes, but can also help predict certain target variables. Furthermore, he has expertise in research design and statistical testing for data issues.
Gert is interested in biology and ecology. Therefore he focuses within the research group on analysis of biological data: genetics of potatoes for selecting improved varieties, growth of shellfish in relation to environmental factors and developing a map layer for biodiversity based on data collected through citizen science by waarneming.nl.
Gert was trained in Methods and Techniques of Psychology (Psychometrics) at Leiden University (1999-2003) and has since applied Data Science to multiple fields.
For TNO he has worked on setting up and performing statistical analysis within epidemiological research and statistical assessment of research designs and research reports. For the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) he has contributed as a researcher to projects in which various government services (e.g. police, investigative services, tax authorities, IND, UWV) share data and research the use of Intelligent Data Analysis. +
